A Grounded Approach to the Law of Attraction
Recently I’ve heard a few people mention that they've written off the “Law of Attraction” as a silly New-Age fad, prompting me to re-evaluate my own stance on it. In this post I'll share with you my evolving idea that the Law of Attraction works best when you can balance emotional presence and acceptance with embracing your own “quantum” power to create your life.
LAW OF ATTRACTION AND QUANTUM THEORY?
The Law of Attraction became more of a mainstream topic after commercial book publications such as “The Secret.” If that reference makes you want to stop reading, it’s for that very reason I ask you to keep reading.
The Law of Attraction implies that “energy flows where attention goes.” This phrase has been thrown around so much that I don’t know who said it first. Basically, if in the unconscious, emotional, mental, and spiritual realms you are focusing on certain patterns of perception, those ideas are going to manifest in physical reality. By the nature of your vibration, you attracted it. I realize this can be difficult to believe when observing all the terrible circumstances of suffering and violence in the world. Nobody deserves to be oppressed. It is never right to blame the abused. Setting this aside, we can nevertheless discuss empowering yourself to create personal change.
Several “New Age” writers claim that quantum physics supports this Law, and while I am enchanted by quantum mechanics and myself enjoy applying these small-scale paradigms to larger-scale outcomes and metaphors, I cannot make any claim that it’s true, or at least true for you. However, take note that modern scientists have gathered substantial evidence to support quantum phenomena that Einstein once dubbed “spooky,” such as quantum entanglement, and theorists like Brian Greene have been popularizing exciting quantum implications , such as parallel universes and the holographic multiverse.
Though his theories are vast and, to some, eccentric, Greene says that he isn’t interested in ideas that “are beyond the bounds of scientific proof.” So don’t ask Brian Greene to support the Law of Attraction anytime soon. But one scientist that might be more willing to engage would be Rupert Sheldrake. His website is a treasure trove of thoughtful research into phenomena that some might deem “parapsychological,” though he approaches the work as a scientist (namely, a biologist). Sheldrake often theorizes and conducts experiments with the basic belief that "the mind is not confined to the brain, but rather, is “field-like” in nature," which leads to pretty compelling insights about phenomena like telepathy and prayer.
In any regard, I’d argue that subjective experience is just another method of observation, and though it doesn’t traditionally fall under scientific experiment, isn’t it fascinating to try an idea on for size and see how it affects your life? What would happen if you let yourself experiment personally with the “Law of Attraction?” Would you be able to measure how your life changes?
WHAT LIMITS GROWTH & HOW TO MOVE PAST IT
Let’s start the experimentation.
First, what limits people?
REPRESSION/DENIAL: Repressing emotions, remaining unaware of emotions bubbling below the surface, insisting that you must be "positive" to be a good or successful, pasting a smile on your face to ignore unpleasant feelings or situations.
WALLOWING/VICTIMHOOD: Feeling trapped in "negativity," self-defeatism, and redundant emotional cycles, unwillingness to take responsibility for thoughts and actions, unwillingness to do the work to improve and heal, unwillingness to unearth what’s been lurking in the unconscious, being attached to a state of victimhood*.
(*Let me repeat that I don't condone victim-blaming, which is different than being attached to the state of victimhood. Someone who ended up in an abusive household/relationship, an impoverished community, etc.—they have every right to feel the emotions that come along with that, and it was not their fault. Sickness in society, chains of suffering unconsciously picked up, sickness of corrupt hierarchical structures privileging certain groups over other groups is to blame. And this is a different fight for a different post. The most I can say right now is that there can still be value in transmuting pain into progress if desired.)
The two sets of beliefs or practices I mentioned are very different, yet in my eyes equally harmful. Most of us have done or do at least one of these things!
If you want to walk a path of healing and growth, why not find a middle way and authentically acknowledge your emotions while taking responsibility for your choices and intentions?
Here are the two basic parts we’ll juggle:
1. Emotional authenticity & presence
2. Reframing & creating the life you want
Please remember that you don't always have to be sunshine and rainbows!
There is NOTHING wrong with being real and honest about things that bother you and experiencing emotions such as anger, confusion, and sadness. These emotions get a bad rap, but all human emotions are energy in motion, and they reveal to us how vast our capacity for experience can be! Ride your emotions like a wave. There is no need to be scared of them anymore. Feel them in your body, and which parts of your body, notice what color they feel like, notice how they move in your body, notice if this emotion brings up other memories of times you felt that emotion. Let yourself feel it all as you ride this wave. And remember that waves are never static! Please don’t make your emotions static—let them change as you process them, which brings us to:
REFRAME: How can you flow with these changing emotions into a space where you can take the wheel back into your hands and transmute all this energy? How can you spin a situation, how can you "take your broken heart and turn it into art?" How do you take responsibility for your own emotions and intentionally reframe to create the life you desire? How do you loosen the grip of the illusive past on your life? How do you want to feel instead?
You invite yourself to leap into a new “quantum” reality, to tap into the energy of the morphic fields. You recognize that you can be in the NOW, which you create with every perception, thought, and magical word. You can use the Million Dollar Question to get you started…
THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION:
I'm going to tell you the big question hypnotherapists use to put you on the fast track to changing your life. This juicy information is totally free, as it always has been! Are you ready? It goes like this:
What do you want?
And how will you feel once you've already achieved that?
That's it! It's the invitation to the feel the future in the instant. (Yes I just totally took a Lady Macbeth quote out of context). It's less about the material achievement itself, and more about the energy of what it feels like. As you begin to visualize yourself in that different space and experience those new sensory stimuli, you can genuinely feel the energy of that new life in your body NOW. This opens the gateways to new realities, realities in which you are whole and always expanding into positive growth.
Neuroscience and cognitive science supports this: apparently, when you imagine something with full commitment to sensory details, the neurons fire in the same way they would if the event were physically happening! Your brain can’t always tell the difference between the imagined and the “real.” Studies have even shown that simply imagining a workout can increase muscle mass. Chemicals are also released in the body as you visualize, and keep in mind that physiological changes that occur in the body during hypnotic trance are well documented. You relax, you enter into a state of natural and quick restoration, everything shifts in the present tense, your energy moves more and more towards the vibration you need to call in the next reality. You and the “you” you’re always becoming, become more and more merged. Get it!?
Once you've set your intentions and physically experienced this altered energy, you've planted a seed. It doesn't mean all your circumstances are going to change overnight, but by changing your present tense energy state, you planted a seed that now begins to gestate. Gestation periods vary per organism and per unique needs and goals. Some seeds take years underground developing root systems before sprouting above the dirt. Some seeds shoot into tall stalks within a few weeks. I wonder what kind of seeds you’re going to plant next? I wonder how you’re going to take care of this life developing anew?
Although skilled hypnotherapists will use lots of more complicated structures and tricks and tools to transform your mind, behaviors, and life, in my opinion this simple Million Dollar Question is at the heart of the magic. Please use it, share it, send me an e-mail if you want to talk more about it!
I fell in love with hypnotherapy when I recognized it a powerful tool to access the unconscious, free yourself from limiting beliefs, and plant the seeds that thrust you into the life you’ve always wanted and deserved. Whether it's as simple as manifesting a life without addictions or a life in which you're finally writing that book you've dreamed of—if you are ready to manifest the life you desire, contact me to explore session options. I want to help you help yourself! Currently I am only booking Skype sessions, but later this summer you can expect to hear more about how to set up an in-person session.
BRINGING IT ALL INTO BALANCE:
_ _ _ _ _
You create your path and you surrender to the moment.
You carve the riverbed and you are the water flowing through it.
You are the puppeteer and you are the puppet.
You are creator, experiencer, and observer all at once.
Everything changes. You are changing.
You see beyond the realm of time and space,
yet you acknowledge your life in a human body, which grows and gestates according to time.
You are radically present, yet you know that your choices
create that present.
You feel your emotions fully,
you know how to let them move like water,
which is never static,
and you are skilled at sailing your own seas:
you take the wheel of your ship with confidence.
Which direction would you like to sail next?
_ _ _ _ _
My life changed when I started to believe these seemingly paradoxical things and practice them.
Know that once you carve your way through your power of intention and vision, it is also your responsibility to recognize signs and opportunities that come up for you. You will be required to be an active participant in the creation of your vision. Follow the signposts, take the opportunities, become a bigger person, let seed sprout, let yourself be delighted by the unexpected manifestations of all the work you've been doing.
Own your power of choice and make it your job to likewise empower others.
